The fascination with “Confinement” and “Isolation” of these challenging environments is what fuels my passion and gives meaning to my life.
CURIOSITY
I am curious and extremely passionate to Understand as to how specific user groups live in confined Extreme Environments on Earth and beyond, and how they handle the various extremities there.
I strongly believe that in such environments where your exterior and interior remain same for the next few months, the immediate surroundings can have a profound impact on a person's brain, emotions, and behavior.
Extreme Environments encompass two (2) realms as per my observation:
PHYSICAL EXTREME
User group – Researchers in Antarctica, Underwater, AstronautsPSYCHOLOGICALLY EXTREME
User groups – Cancer patient, Terminal illness, Prisons
Particularly in these challenging environments, it is important to keep in mind that design goes beyond bricks and mortar. Where each design element can have an impact on one's brain and behavior.
AIM
The intent here is to understand the overlaps between these physical and psychologically confined environments, its impact on the brain and how we can cross-pollinate design ideas to overcome the challenges faced by each.
E.g., Are there features in healthcare that could be used on a space station to facilitate teamwork within the crew?
Or features in a research station that might be useful in a patient room
Think of this as a journey, a journey where I myself don't know the destination yet. But which has sowed it's seeds from a burning desire and urge to explore. This journey, will encounter pauses, failures, the wrong route, as well as successes. It may take me a while, but I believe I will discover something on this path. And that discovery is what's will make it worth it.
